Welcome to the first episode of the new season of Master Builders SA podcast, ConstructHER. In each episode, we shine a light on females and businesses in the building and construction industry doing great things. In this episode, we hear from Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia. Together with our co-host and chair of the HiViZ Committee, Holly Gardner, they discuss how Denita landed the top role at National level, her career background and how she uses her expertise to lobby for the industry. As the first female national CEO in Master Builders’ 130 year history, Denita found that both the political and practical aspects of the environment was very male dominated. She did not let this sway her and instead rose above any negativity and learned how to properly and confidently communicate effectively with her male counterparts to ensure the member’s voices were heard. Denita’s goal is to encourage more women to sit on boards within the industry, work amongst policy & change and to no longer have building and construction known as a male dominated field but one of flexibility, solidarity and empowerment. Holly and Denita also discussed how important education is around the varying roles that make up the building and construction industry, both on the tools and behind the scenes. Denita also shared the exciting new development that the National office will be launching soon in relation to education for schools about career opportunities in the industry.
