After Basic training, while at AIT, he was selected to go to NCO school, where he had training geared towards Vietnam for ten weeks. He then flew into Cam Ranh Bay and later went to Camp Evans. Paul was assigned B Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He understood that he would learn from the men that had been at Vietnam longer than him. He conducted Search and Destroy missions and was chosen to be on a battalion Killer Team and went to the mountains around Ripcord AO. He discusses April 1st, when Ripcord was targeted, and then patrolling Ripcord. In June, Hansmann’s first son was born allowed him to leave and go home due to potential complications with his family. In the middle of July, he went back to Vietnam and then a few days later they evacuated the base. Next, he was at Fire Base Kathryn. Hansmann talks about his time in Vietnam and about getting an early-out to be able to go home and help his father in law farm in Iowa. He also discusses PTSD and how his time in the service affected him and his family life, as well as how connecting with fellow Veterans at reunions allowed him to be able to talk about what he’s been through.
