We do need to distinguish between belief and fact - but beyond that need, belief and religion must always be a private matter. This is important because so much social unrest and social damage arises from attempts to impose religions or beliefs onto others. As described in the previous video 'Feelings are facts', what we each feel or believe is what we feel or believe: we have no direct choice in that. Punishing others for 'failing' to believe what we want them to believe is merely an act of abuse or violence - which doesn't help anyone at all. Yes, beliefs may well seem absurd to others, or even to ourselves at times: hence the classic Christian apologia, "Credo quia absurdum est", 'I believe because it is absurd'. And even seemingly-absurd beliefs can be the source of innovation, the source of breakthrough in science and elsewhere. We do need to cherish our beliefs, and respect them - yet also need to know when those same beliefs tell us that it's time to let go, and move on to a new way to view our world. Yet despite that inherent lack of 'control', either from within ourselves, or supposedly imposed by others, we each do have responsibility about how those beliefs may impact on our relations with ourselves and others, and on our interactions with the world. When beliefs collide with fact, it's rarely the belief that wins: we ignore that fact at our peril...
