Merry Christmas Everyone! 2025 has been a vast and varied year, with multiple historic events across the calendar. From the first ‘Whistle-Up’ on New Year’s Day, lines across the world have gone all out to celebrate this bicentennial year of the modern railway, commemorating this milestone achievement in their own special and unique ways. Over the last twelve months, we’ve seen LNER thoroughbreds ‘Flying Scotsman’ haul her first freight in over thirty years and 60163 ‘Tornado’ return to the mainline. The North Norfolk, Severn Valley and Statfold Barn Railways celebrated major anniversaries. Even the Island of Sodor marked eighty years of existence at the Talyllyn Railway. We’ve seen the return of old favourites like GWR Collett 5029 ‘Nunney Castle’ and BR 8P 71000 ‘Duke Of Gloucester’, and the withdrawal of LMS Stanier ‘Jubilee’ 45596 ‘Bahamas’. But of course, who could forget the moment the gates opened on the morning of ‘The Greatest Gathering’, or when the replica ‘Locomotion’ crossed Skerne Bridge on ‘The Anniversary Journey’, two hundred years to the day after the Stockton and Darlington Railway changed the world forever. These two events will be ingrained in the memories of those who were there for the rest of their lives. To see generations of families united in the magic of steam was a truly special sight to behold. So, what lies ahead for Second Valve Steam? Actually, our first trip is already booked up, heading back to one of my favourite lines for the first time in almost ten years. Before you know it, spring gala season will be in full swing.
