The Jab of Georges St-Pierre was at times majestic, and other times a damage mechanism. His lead hand strikes were versatile and variant, efficient and educated (I'll try to avoid cliche). In Episode 1 of this (?) part series on the jab, I'm going to focus on distance control, in this case distance domination. The jab (or 1) serves many purposes and is (without much argument) the most important strike in combat sports. From range-finding, to cadence disruption, and vision obstruction to why the southpaw jab is normally different in function. This won't be the overplayed nomenclature attached to the jab in a series with a bunch of examples of which constitutes which from the flick jab to the Power or Thai jab, it WILL be about the FUNCTION of both. The idea is to provide information they haven't perhaps seen elsewhere, and regardless of the length of video, provide some comprehensive oversight on jab function, "the why" if you will. If the subject is the jab, and the chapter is specifically about controlling distance, which is a paramount item of dictation in this zero sum game.....then who better than Georges St-Pierre in a Mixed Martial Arts setting. The distance to control is not only more abundant, but I'd also contend more difficult to control. Tough to argue those points, as boxing, and kickboxing have clinch breaks, and Muay Thai uses a power jab almost exclusively, almost less refined and swift. When the idea to do a series on the jab from long time friend Elijah, I thought he meant "the what", but was more excited about "the why" upon a more thorough explanation. I'm going to start with this entry, the most extreme case for distance dictation leading to not just dominance, but there isn't an opponent of GSP's that he hasn't beaten. Dominance at the GOAT level. Tough to argue the efficacy of not just Georges jab, but the strike at the highest level of combat. For my smarks that read these, I'm going to show other fighters that fit this same narrative from other forms of pugilism. Sonny Liston had an amazingly effective jab, and incredibly similar to Georges despite their very different approaches to combat. I'll also preview some future episodes on.......alright enough typing.
