The queen and her husband Prince Philip gave the Obamas a post-lunch tour of the Buckingham Palace archive and art collection. The president stopped in front of a page from King George III's personal journal, dated sometime around 1783, not long after America won its independence. In the afternoon, the President and First Lady laid a wreath at Westminster Abbey and heard the abbey's choir sing. The Obamas also visited Downing Street, where they were greeted by British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha. In a joint opinion piece published in Tuesday's Times of London, Obama and Cameron wrote that they had both come of age during the 1980s, a turbulent decade that saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. Now, the two leaders wrote, the partnership between their two nations flourishes because of common interests and values: "a perfect alignment of what we both need and what we both believe." They listed common challenges including supporting the democratic stirrings in the Middle East and North Africa, the ongoing war in Afghanistan, combating terrorism and strengthening the global economy. Later on Tuesday, the Obamas will enjoy the rarefied pomp of a state dinner before spending the night at Buckingham Palace. After England, Obama will travel to Deauville, France, to meet with the heads of leading industrial nations, before ending his Europe trip with a visit to Poland, a strategically important Central European ally.
