Czech composer and pianist Jaroslav Ježek was one of the most celebrated musicians in his hometown of Prague during the first half of the 20th century, equally at home in popular music styles and art music. Forced to leave his homeland by the Nazi occupation, he spent the last years of his life in near-complete obscurity in New York City, where he composed this piano sonata, one of his final works (he died in 1941). The sonata, which blends jazz rhythms, classical structure, and a modernist aesthetic, is bright and rhythmic; only the ponderous slow movement seems to reflect the devastation of World War II. Recorded Jan. 31 & Feb. 1 in New York City by Jason Wirth. A special thank you to Michael Beckerman for pointed this wonderful work my way!
