Hot vs Cold Experiment with a Twist (Chemistry)

In this Hot vs Cold experiment, we use oil and water to change the typical outcome (see the original hot vs cold water experiment here:    • Hot vs Cold Water Experiment (Chemistry)  ). Even though the oil is colder than the water it stays on top due to the lower density. Using the thermal camera we can see how the temperature doesn't determine which one has a higher density when you are using two different substances. This experiment is a great way to visualize the relationship between the density of substances and how thermal expansion doesn't give you the whole picture. ▶️ Get supplies to try this density water experiment for yourself: https://www.beardedscienceguy.com/how... ▶️ How to do the hot vs cold oil and water experiment: 1. Gather supplies -- two glasses that are exactly the same size, hot water, a thin hard piece of plastic, oil-based food coloring, water-based food coloring, and baby oil. 2. Fill one glass to the top with hot water to the brim, so that the water is bubbling up above the rim of the glass. 3. Fill the other glass to the top with cold baby oil the same way. We chilled the baby oil in the refrigerator for about an hour before the experiment. 4. Add a few drops of food coloring to the hot water and stir. 5. Add a few drops of a different food coloring to the oil and stir until well mixed. 6.Place the piece of flat, rigid plastic on top of the cold baby oil glass. 7. Carefully hold the plastic place and flip the oil glass upside down, placing it on top of the hot water glass. Be sure to line up the glasses perfectly so that the brims touching all the way around. 8. Carefully remove the plastic from between the two glasses and observe. ▶️ How the hot vs. cold oil and water experiment works: Unlike the traditional hot versus cold experiment using water in both glasses hot and cold water, the fact that we used baby oil allows the cold baby oil to stay on top of the hot water. When the water particles are at a high temperature, they're moving faster and pushing further away from each other so they take up more space than when the water particles are at a lower temperature. However, the density of water is different than the density of baby oil, so even though hot water has a lower density than cold water, this change in density is very small and doesn't even come close to the difference between baby oil's density and water, which is about 80% as dense as water. We can even flip this experiment upside down. Because of the polar/non-polar nature of water and baby oil, they stay completely separated and the baby oil ends up back on top again. ------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE for more cool science experiments! https://www.youtube.com/c/BeardedScie...
