SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 71-year-old Navarre woman was killed Wednesday afternoon after crashing her car into the back of a school bus. It happened at the intersection of Sunrise Drive and Highway 98 in Navarre near the Holley by the Sea neighborhood. An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the wreck. A WEAR News crew watched as first responders spent hours carefully removing a red Chevy Malibu from underneath the school bus. Family members identified the driver of the Chevy as Sandra Williams. The Santa Rosa County School District says 21 students from Woodlawn Beach Middle School were on their bus going home when a car crashed into them. The school district says none of the children were injured. Jessica Brown says her son was sitting in the back of the bus when the car hit them. "They were in the turning lane to turn left onto Sunrise," Brown said. "They were probably a mile from their stop when they heard a loud boom and the car ran into the back of them." Brown says the kids were evacuated and another bus took them home. Williams' son-in-law, Kent Vancil, says she was a loving mother of three and grandmother of nine. "And I'm still in shock, I guess," said Vancil. "I don't know how to process it other than something bad happened and she's not here with us now." Vancil says he found out about the crash the second it happened. "Yeah, I got the alert through Life360 because we track our parents as they age out," said Vancil. "And it said 'hard crash.' I tried to contact her. She didn't answer. I looked on the map. It showed the car stationary. I engaged my wife Jennifer to come check on her mom. And then through all of that is when I got a text from another family member and friend that something bad had happened and said that maybe there was a casualty. And when you look at it, there's a school bus and one car, so I just put two and two together." Vancil says Williams was the primary caretaker for her husband Don, who suffered a stroke recently. He says the couple were married for more than 50 years and lived together in Holley by the Sea. A spokesperson for Santa Rosa County Schools says counselors will be available at Woodlawn Beach Middle School Thursday to provide support to students. #florida #navarre #crash
