As the Second World War waged on with the German Army rampaging across different lands in Europe, there were many war crimes committed by them. One of the most sought after war criminals after the war had ended was Joachim Peiper, a member of the SS who was also the commander of Kampfgruppe Peiper. This was a tank division that committed huge numbers of atrocities and war crimes including the Malmedy Massacre. On the Eastern Front, his soldiers would burn down many villages and execute people and they became known as 'The Blowtorch Battalion.' Joachim Peiper was closer to the hierarchy of the Third Reich than most, as he was the adjutant and assistant to Heinrich Himmler the Head of the SS. He accompanied Himmler on a number of visits to concentration camps, and personally witnessed many executions and killings. He had inside knowledge of the evils of the Third Reich, and also met Hitler a number of times. He was seen as a skilled army General, however he was involved in so many war crimes that resulted in the deaths of hundreds. After World War 2 had come to an end, he was placed on trial and was sentenced to death but his sentence was overturned after he was tortured for a confession.
