The CSUSB Modern China Lecture Series Presents: Dr. Perry Link: The Thought of Liu Xiaobo, China's Nobel Peace Prize Laureate November 4, 2014 12pm to 2pm CSUSB Pfau Library, PL-4005, 4th floor Talk Description: Liu Xiaobo, winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate of non-violence, sits in a prison in northeast China serving an eleven-year prison sentence for “inciting subversion of the state.” Although Liu is best known for his political stands, especially his advocacy of human rights and an end to authoritarian government, his writings reach deeply into history and culture in both China and the West. His book "No Enemies, No Hatred" includes essays on law, corruption, humor, sex, the world-view of farmers, the rise of the Internet, ancient Chinese thought, the weaknesses of Western civilization, and much more. Speaker Bio: Dr. Perry Link is Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages at the University of California, Riverside. Link has a B.A. in philosophy, M.A. in East Asian Studies, and Ph.D. in Chinese history from Harvard University and has taught Chinese language and literature at Princeton University (1973-77 and 1989-2008) and UCLA (1977-1988). He has published in the fields of modern Chinese language, literature, popular culture, intellectual history, art, and politics. Among his many books are "An Anatomy of Chinese: Rhythm, Metaphor, Politics" (Harvard, 2013), and he is co-editor of Liu Xiaobo's "No Enemies, No Hatred" (Belknap, 2013). Co-sponsors of the event include the the CSUSB History Club/Phi Alpha Theta Chapter, the History Department, the Intellectual Life Fund, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Extended Learning, Pfau Library, and the University Diversity Committee.
