UPDATE: There is now a sped up/corrected version of this recording at • Gordon Lightfoot - BBC Session (Sped up? C... Recordings of some Gordon Lightfoot songs which I came across. They're not the original studio recordings as there only seems to be Lightfoot on guitar and vocals, a bass player and maybe another guitarist. There is no live audience and no backing strings. The BBC made many session recordings in the late 60s and early 70s in order to get around "needle time" restrictions. These restrictions, which had been imposed by the record companies and the Musicians' Union, meant that Radio 1 et al. could only play commercially available music for a limited proportion of their airtime. However, session recordings were counted as live music, presumably as orchestral performances, jazz concerts etc. had already been pre-recorded and broadcast without restriction for decades. Session recordings made everybody happy: The Musicians' Union, as they wanted to "Keep Music Live"; the record companies as they thought that people would go out and buy the records; and the artists themselves as it meant their music was being played. Of course, it was musicians like Gordon Lightfoot who benefitted most from this arrangement as their simple arrangements meant they could make their session recordings sound pretty similar to the studio versions.
