While the world knows her as Om Puri’s first wife or Annu Kapoor’s sister, her true identity is that of a warrior. Born in Bhopal, Seema’s childhood was spent amidst poverty and social boycott. Because of her father's theater company, people looked down upon them as "Natak-Mandli" folk. The financial crisis was so severe that at age 15, when their electricity was cut off, Seema wrote a letter in red ink to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which eventually helped her mother secure a government job. Seema and Om Puri’s love was built on simplicity. After a 10-year relationship, they got engaged in 1989. However, just one day before the wedding, Om Puri confessed to having an affair with their house-help. Under social and family pressure, Seema went ahead with the marriage, but it became a burden. While Seema was pregnant, Om Puri began an affair with journalist Nandita. Due to the mental trauma, Seema lost her child, and even at that tragic moment, Om Puri sent money through his secretary instead of visiting the hospital. After their divorce in 1993, Seema returned home empty-handed but undefeated. She carved her own niche in direction, writing, and puppetry. She won a National Award and even trained the new generation of Bollywood (like Janhvi Kapoor) in linguistic nuances. In his final days, when Om Puri was troubled and ill in his second marriage, it was Seema who provided him with solace.
