THE COSTLY ESCAPE: THE STUDENTS WHO BOUGHT THEIR WAY OUT OF WAR By Milan Sharma The arrival hall at Delhi’s international airport is usually defined by routine—families reuniting, tourists navigating baggage belts, and the steady rhythm of global travel. But today the mood is different. A group of exhausted Indian medical students walks out of the terminal not as ordinary passengers, but as survivors of a conflict zone. They have crossed borders, navigated chaotic transit routes through Armenia and Dubai, and paid for every leg of their escape from the escalating Iran–Israel crisis. Yet their homecoming is strikingly subdued. No large evacuation aircraft. No triumphant reception. Just silence, fatigue—and a quiet sense of grievance. ⸻ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS 🔹 SELF-FUNDED ESCAPE Most students did not return on government evacuation flights. Instead, they purchased commercial tickets through transit hubs like Armenia and Dubai. 🔹 THE SILENT PROTEST Several returning students declined to speak to cameras. Their silence reflects frustration over what they perceive as limited state-led evacuation compared to earlier crises. 🔹 EMPTY BUSES, EMPTY TRUST The Jammu & Kashmir government arranged sleeper buses from Delhi to Srinagar—but most students chose to book flights instead of enduring another multi-day road journey. 🔹 STILL STRANDED IN TEHRAN With flights cancelled on March 13 and March 17, several students remain trapped in Tehran. ⸻ [00:14] THE BITTER HOMECOMING Students who travelled via the Armenia border arrive in Delhi after a long and stressful journey across multiple transit points. Despite reaching home safely, many appear visibly frustrated and decline to speak to reporters. “ईरान से आज जो मेडिकल के छात्र हैं वो वापस लौटे हैं… लेकिन हमने देखा कि कुछ बच्चे बात नहीं करना चाह रहे थे, कुछ नाराज से दिखे।” [00:14] The mood is not relief alone—it is relief mixed with resentment. ⸻ [01:25] THE EXPECTATION GAP Representatives from medical associations highlight the gap between what the government facilitated and what the students expected. Indian diplomatic missions helped relocate students from vulnerable areas to safer cities like Qom, but many students anticipated a full-scale evacuation similar to past missions. “ये चाहते थे कि भारत सरकार की तरफ से टिकट्स हों… हमारी एसोसिएशन हमेशा मिनिस्ट्री ऑफ एक्सटर्नल अफेयर्स की आभारी है।” [02:01] ⸻ [03:05] EMPTY BUSES ON THE TARMAC One of the starkest visuals at the airport: sleeper buses arranged by the Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation standing almost empty. After days of travel, students are unwilling to endure another multi-day road journey to Srinagar and instead choose to pay for domestic flights. “दिल्ली से श्रीनगर तुम बस में बैठ के जाओगे इतने घंटे… तीन दिन आप सफर ही करते रहोगे।” [08:32] ⸻ [10:10] THE ACADEMIC TRAP For many students still in Tehran, leaving the country is not an easy decision. The experience of students returning from Ukraine and Russia during the 2022 war looms large. Many faced enormous difficulties continuing their medical education in India after leaving their foreign universities. As a result, some students are choosing to remain in Iran despite the security risks. “भारत में फॉरेन मेडिकल कॉलेज से पढ़ाई कंटिन्यू करना बहुत मुश्किल हो जाता है… संघर्ष अभी जारी रहेगा।” [11:19] ⸻ [12:02] A MOTHER’S PERSPECTIVE A woman returning from Dubai with her children describes the atmosphere inside Iran today. Daily life continues—but under the constant shadow of missile alerts and interceptions. Schools are closing. Offices are shifting to remote work. And uncertainty defines every day. “मिसाइल थ्रेट का मैसेज जरूर आता है और वो इंटरसेप्ट कर देते हैं उसको।” [13:16] ⸻ Stay informed. Stay analytical.
