Orsanmichele has gone through a few changes these last few months with a new ticket office that reveals the never seen before rear side of Orcagna's 14th century tabernacle. We took a look around this fascinating building and spoke to the director of the Bargello Museum group to get an insight into the role of Orsanmichele in the city and what the future has in store. Previously a grain store, this church and museum has a unique history that often goes unnoticed. On the via dei Calzaiuoli, one of the busiest streets in Florence for foot traffic, many Florentines have never even stepped inside the church. Inside, you'll find a fresco of the unknown patron saint of Florence, St. Anne, who lovingly holds the city in her arms as well as visible slots on the columns in the church from which the grain from the upper floors was delivered. The first floor sculpture museum holds an impressive collection of Renaissance sculpture that spans the whole period from the 14th century to the 16th. It's one of the only collections of its kind and boasts stone and bronze sculptures by Verrocchio, Nanni di Banco, Donatello, Ghiberti and Giambologna.
