Bay rum is a medium-sized tree that grows up to about 36 feet. Bayrum's branches grow upright reaching towards the sky. The angled branches and dense, columnar or pyramidal crown make an ideal street tree. It has attractive smooth grayish to light brown aromatic bark peeling off to reveal pinkish underbark. The dark green glossy leaves contain an aromatic essential oil with hints of clove and cinnamon. The Flowers are white and fragrant, and borne in rounded clusters. Fruits are ovoid, and black at maturity. It has multiple uses and applications in landscapes, as a backyard tree, or to create screens of natural privacy hedges.
