Accessory muscles are muscles that help the main breathing muscles, especially when more effort is needed. They are important for deep breathing and when there are respiratory challenges, like during exercise or when there are airway issues. Examples of accessory muscles Sternocleidomastoid: Located in the neck, this muscle lifts the sternum and clavicle, which expands the chest cavity Scalene muscles: Located in the neck, these muscles elevate the second and third ribs Pectoralis minor: Located in the upper chest and front of the shoulders, this muscle elevates the third, fourth, and fifth ribs Internal intercostal muscles: Depress the ribs, which shrinks the thoracic cavity and pushes air out of the lungs Sternalis muscle: Helps open the airways to allow more oxygen to the lungs Serratus anterior muscle: Elevates the ribs and expands the thorax Rectus abdominis muscle: Flexes the spine and compresses the abdominal cavity Accessory muscles help maximize air intake and ensure enough oxygen reaches the bloodstream.
