Ancient Tamil Civilization in Vaigai & Porunai River Valleys [A Holistic Picture] - Part 3 |UI-030

In this video, we shall look mainly at material evidence for the antiquity and cultural and other dimensions of the civilization, found in three archaeological sites, namely Sivagalai in Srivaikuntam Taluk of Thoothukudi district, Sasthapuram in Nanguneri taluk of Tirunelveli district, and again Adichanallur in Thoothukudi district - all along the river Porunai or Thamirabarani. This video is the third and concluding part of the video series on “Ancient Tamil civilization in Vaigai & Porunai river valleys - A Holistic picture’. Based on objects found and datings done in excavations at Keeladi and nearby areas of Agaram, manalur & konthagai, we can conclude that the Vaigai civilization, which flourished 2600 years ago, was characterised by a very affluent, literate and sophisticated society, which was essentially agrarian. The excavations at Adichanallur, Krishnapuram, Korkai, Sivagalai and Sasthapuram lead us to the conclusions that the Porunai or Thamirabarani civilization is as old as 3200 to 3800 years ago. It was older than the Vaigai Civilization. Adichanallur and surrounding areas were mining, smelting, fabrication of metals like iron, copper and gold, and trading centres for a variety of metal objects, that attracted traders from all over the world to land at the nearby Korkai port. High tin bronze objects were in use. This was an affluent, literate, industrial-cum-trading society.
