The Asheville Police Department has confirmed that one of its recently sworn-in officers is on investigative suspension after he allegedly assaulted a woman. The agency also confirmed to News 13 that the officer, Paul Anthony Duvernay III, has had three calls involving domestic fights with women since he was hired last June. APD confirmed that its high-ranking officials were aware of the calls and that an internal investigation had been opened. The police department declined an on-camera interview but provided further details about the incidents involving Duvernay arguing with two different women at his South Asheville apartment. On Friday, Feb. 20, Duvernay graduated from APD's Basic Law Enforcement Training. On the same day, a different woman called and filed assault charges, where a magistrate issued a warrant for Duverney's address, according to APD. He was held without bond. Duverney had his first court appearance on misdemeanor assault charges on Monday, Feb. 23. He was released on $5,000 bond. Timeline: Below is a breakdown of the events involving Duverney as they occurred. September 2024: APD reported that Duverney "filed an online report for larceny," alleging that items had been taken from inside his apartment. Two calls in January, APD reports, did not have either Duvernay or the female involved alleging domestic violence. Jan. 9, 2026: APD reported that Duvernay "called and said he was in a verbal argument with his girlfriend." APD reports neither party alleged crimes, and "the parties agreed to separate for the evening." Jan. 6, 2026: APD reported "the same woman and her sibling was there [at the apartment] helping her move out. The woman and our employee [Duverney] were in another heated argument." APD reported, again, that neither party alleged domestic crimes. Feb. 20, 2026: APD reported that a different woman "asked for an officer to call because she had questions related to the eviction process at that apartment." APD said an officer spoke with the woman, and "an APD supervisor [got] involved. He spoke with her, and she reported that on Feb. 3, 2026, an assault occurred." A magistrate issued a warrant for Duvernay's arrest. Deputy Chief Sean Aardema provided News 13 with a statement regarding the timeline of calls leading up to last Friday: "The incidents in January were brought to the attention of his chain of command and the professional standards (internal investigations) section was conducting an inquiry into those incidents to determine what course of action to take." Duverney remains on investigative suspension as an investigation continues on his future with the Asheville Police Department. #news #crime #asheville #nc _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: / news13 WLOS ABC 13 News on X: https://x.com/WLOS_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: / wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Cha...
