A thin quadrilateral muscle occupying the interval between the maxilla and mandible at the side of the face. It forms the anterior part of the cheek or the lateral wall of the oral cavity. It compresses the cheeks inwards against molars and works along with orbicularis oris and superior constrictor during swallowing, mastication, blowing, and sucking. It is also called "trumpeter muscle". (Embryology) It derives from the second pharyngeal arch (hyoid arch). It starts to develop along with other facial muscles between 3 and 8 weeks. (Blood supply) • posterosuperior alveolar artery, a branch of the maxillary artery • buccal artery, a branch of the maxillary artery • anterior, inferior, and posterior buccal branch of the facial artery These arteries form extensive anastomotic vascular plexus on the lateral surface and within its fibers of the muscle. (Venous drainage) • pterygoid venous plexus • internal maxillary vein (Innervation) • Sensory innervation: Buccal branch of the mandibular part of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V3). • Motor innervation: Buccal branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII)
