This week I broke down the lighting setup from The Open Residency Podcast. The look is minimal but very intentional, and the huge space gives it a clean, high-end feel without looking overproduced. Setup used: • 3-light setup • No hair light • Large open space with strong depth • Lights are either rigged high out of frame or removed in post • Visible rigging/wires appear to be cleaned up in post What works so well here is how simple the setup is while still feeling polished. The image stays clean, the subjects separate naturally from the background, and the space itself does a lot of the visual work. Why this works Simple key structure A three-light setup keeps the subject flattering and consistent without overcomplicating the frame. It feels controlled without feeling “lit.” Huge space = natural separation Because the room is so large, you get depth and separation from distance and contrast, not from a heavy rim or hair light. Clean frame execution The lights are either placed very high and hidden well, or production removes distractions in post. That cleanup helps preserve a natural look while still feeling premium. No hair light, still dimensional This is a good example of how strong placement, exposure balance, and space design can replace the need for a dedicated hair light. The result feels cinematic, modern, and focused on conversation over visual noise.
