Episode 4 - The Stuyvesant Effect West India Company Director Willem Kieft had made an incredible mess of the New Netherland Colony in North America. He'd been picking fights with its residents, started the disastrous Kieft-Indian war, plunged the colony into poverty, and caused a depopulation of New Netherland. When the West India Company Directors received letters from the New Netherlanders complaining about the Director's mismanagement of the colony, they decided to appoint another, more capable ruler, someone with diplomatic and military skills. On May 11, 1647, this new Director arrived at Manhattan to replace Kieft as the "Redresser General," to sort out all colonial malpractices. But who was this peg-legged man?
