The four organizers of this panel are members of The Alternatives Project (TAP). TAP is a diverse, transnational collective of progressive academics, union members, civil society activists, and social movement participants concerned with building a global collective critical voice focused on education and societal transformation. We see societal transformation as an essential response to the global polycrisis manifested by the convergence of poverty, inequality, climate breakdown, pandemics, rampant violence, war, and democratic erosion and driven by structures of capitalism, racism, patriarchy, ableism, militarism, and more. Founded in 2019, TAP has engaged in many related activities. Here we’ll mention four: 1. Our initial Statement entitled Education Justice for Societal Transformation: A Framework for Action (signed by over 500 educators from around the world – please consider signing); 2. We helped found a network of amazing organizations (including Global Tapestry for Alternatives (GTA) and Ecoversities) that jointly sponsored about a dozen webinars on education alternatives as part of the Learnings for Alternative Futures effort; 3. Last year we published a book-length open access NORRAG Special Issue entitled Education for Societal Transformation: Alternatives for a Just Future with 40 chapters by 70 authors; and 4. Most recently, we published an article in GTA’s periodical on Learning and Education entitled “The Need for Alternative Education” that discussed “why do we need alternatives?” and “what do alternatives really mean?” Recognizing that all of us at REC 5.0 are concerned with what it means for education to contribute to societal transformation, our panel will feature a very short start from TAP members followed by an open conversation about these issues with participants. ______________________________________ This session was recorded at the Re-Imagining Education Conference 5.0, fueled by the Ecoversities Alliance and partnering organizations and communities from around the world. It is an annual online conference to radically re-imagine the future of education. In 2025 it was held from April 26th Feb to 1st March . https://re-imagining.education/ http://ecoversities.org
