In 2013, the UMCA invited ten contemporary artists — Radcliffe Bailey, Mary Evans, Brendan Fernandes, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Julie Mehretu, Ann Messner, Jefferson Pinder, Tim Rollins & K.O.S., Mickalene Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems — to create new works of art inspired by the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois. The resulting works became Du Bois in Our Time – an exhibition still salient and vital today. We invite you to ponder these artistic responses as documented in the short film Du Bois + Ten Artists. Excerpts from interviews with the artists give the viewer first-hand insight into each artist’s work process. The result is a celebration of W.E.B. Du Bois and his ongoing legacy — a commentary, a critique, and a challenge going forward. The film emerged from a collaboration among the ten artists; the University Museum of Contemporary Art at UMass Amherst; scholars from the university (the first to include an African American Studies program in the U.S.); and elsewhere. The film was coordinated by American History Workshop, a Brooklyn-based historical research think-tank and museum planning practice. The director of the film, Lynda B. Kaplan, is a principal at the Workshop. Ms. Kaplan has created media installations for exhibitions at institutions across the country, from Arizona to New York. The writer, scholar, and activist W.E B. Du Bois was arguably the most important black intellectual figure of the twentieth century. Find out more about his work and legacy at the UMass W. E. B. Du Bois Center. For more information about the exhibition please visit: https://fac.umass.edu/UMCA_DIOT/Online/
