A playthrough of Hal's 1991 golf game for the Super Nintendo, Hal's Hole in One Golf. Played through an 18-hole round in stroke mode. I remember playing this not long after it came out, and as a kid I was a bit disappointed by it. Weirdly enough, it was actually just fine - the game plays nicely and the Mode 7 effects were impressive in their time. It's just that it lacks any personality. Once the game starts, there are two things that might surprise you. First, there's no sky. It's black. And it's really distracting. The other is that there's no screen with a realistic-ish sprite of your guy on the course swinging the club. The only indication you have that the ball isn't just moving by itself is the tiny little black figure in the swing meter that shows up for about two seconds. Mode 7 is cool, but hello? This is the SNES. Why don't I get a blue sky or a vaguely recognizable avatar to play as? So whatever. It's bland, for sure. If you want a more enjoyable golf game from around this time period, Waialae and Jack Nicklaus were both about as good for gameplay, and both of them also had those elements that made them seem not completely sterile and barren. I don't dislike Hole in One Golf, and it's not a bad game. I just don't like it enough to play over several other SNES golf games. ______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
