In the exciting second part of our Hakone journey, The Onsen Guy is once again avoiding the tourist crowds and uncovering the best hidden experiences this iconic hot spring destination has to offer! The day starts with a peaceful stroll through Hakone’s lush nature, paired with my favorite way to wake up — an asaburo (morning bath). At the Fuji-Hakone Guest House, I soak in the milky-white Nigori-yu baths, fed directly from the sulfuric hot springs of Owakudani. These mineral-rich waters are famous for their skin-rejuvenating benefits and that classic Hakone hot spring scent. From there, I set sail on a private cruise across Lake Ashi, Hakone’s most famous lake, with stunning views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day. We visit iconic landmarks like Hakone Shrine and Kuzuryu Shrine from the water, a unique perspective few visitors get to enjoy. Next, we take the Hakone Ropeway high into the mountains to see Owakudani’s volcanic vents up close. With a private nature hike, I explore bubbling sulfur pools, steamy landscapes, and the spot where Hakone’s legendary black onsen eggs are boiled in the natural hot springs. Naturally, I couldn’t leave without tasting one (or maybe a few)!
