To begin to understand and take delight in love gained, one must first experience love lost. Beyond the light of day there will always be the darkness of the night. I find a simple, honest beauty in the melancholy and bittersweet; perhaps it is because the juxtaposition of light and dark, pain and ecstasy, love and loss seem altogether more real, more human. These two songs are taken from my song cycle This Too Shall Pass, composed for soprano and piano in 2009. The four songs in the cycle set elegies by different poets – Since I Lost You is by D.H. Lawrence, and My Prime of Youth by Chidiock Tichborne. The sombre yet warm tone of the clarinet in its lower and middle registers imbues these songs with the meaning left behind – even as the words have been removed.” (Anne Cawrse) These ‘songs’ were arranged for Crux Duo by Anne Cawrse.
