Khandoba or Malhari Martanda is the deity of several Maharastrian families, including warriors and priests, as well as farmers and herders. The temple is located on a 758-m-high hillock, which is rich in lime deposits that are the primary building material for the noted Shaniwar Wada Fort, the central seat of the Maratha empire. The Bhandara festival held here sees close to six lakh visitors flocking to the temple town. It involves the showering of haldi (turmeric) as the devotees make their way up the hill. The route, in fact, gets a pretty yellow hue because of this tradition. The “sonyachi Jejuri” or golden Jejuri takes places three times in a year. An idol of the deity is taken on a yatra (journey) till the nearby Karha river, where it is immersed. To reach the temple, you have to go through seven arches and then go down some steps. It has a generous courtyard with walled compounds. There are 63 verandahs (roofed porches) in the complex. It is designed like a fort with three entrance gates and this is why the locals call it 'kot', which means fort. All devotees have to enter from the northern gate. The worship of Khandoba began in the 12th to 13th century. It was built by Yadavas in 12th century. The Khandoba temple was rebuilt during the reign of the Peshwas. In 1737–1739, Chimaji Appa, brother of Peshwa Baji Rao I, gifted Portuguese church bells from Vasai to the temple. Lord Khandoba, also known as Malhari Martand, is regarded as the divine protector of warriors and is especially revered by farming and shepherding communities. The temple became a significant religious hub during the Peshwa era, symbolizing not only devotion but also Maratha pride and victory. Since centuries, newly married couples have visited the Jejuri shrine, about 49 km from Pune, to seek the blessings of Lord Khandoba. Grooms have a daunting ritual awaiting them at the steps of the temple. They are supposed to lift their brides up the stairs that lead up to the sanctum. Devotees throw turmeric in the air as an offering to the god, and as a result the steps of the hill temple and premises have a yellow colour. It is popularly believed as the celebration of the wedding of the deity Khandoba with the bride Mhalsa, and turmeric is the auspicious offering The exact history of the sword, which is made of rustproof alloy, is still a mystery that has baffled many a researcher. However, the inscriptions on it say that it was gifted to the deity by 17th century Maratha Sardars Mahipatrao Panse and Ramrao Panse as thanks for the granting of their wishes. As per the new rule enforced by Shri Martand Dev Sansthan, Jejuri, devotees will be required to wear traditional Indian attire to enter the temple for darshan.
