Der 1899 gegründete Ruhrtalsperrenverein (RTV) und der 1913 gegründete Ruhrverband (RV) erfüllten bis 1990 als zwei Wasserverbände unter einem Dach ihre gesetzliche Aufgabe, „in ausreichender Menge und Güte Wasser für die Bevölkerung und Industrie bereitzuhalten“, und wurden am 1. Juli 1990 durch das neue Ruhrverbandsgesetz (RuhrVG) zum heutigen Ruhrverband vereinigt. Mit mehr als 1.000 Beschäftigten und über 800 wasserwirtschaftlichen Anlagen gehört der Ruhrverband, der seinen Hauptsitz bis heute in Essen hat, zu den größten Wasserwirtschaftsunternehmen in Deutschland.
