Until I watched Lolita, I had enjoyed exactly half of the Kubrick films I'd seen: I love 2001, and am a big fan of The Shining, but didn't like Dr. Strangelove and hated A Clockwork Orange. Thankfully, Lolita tipped Kubrick's filmography to the 'like' side of the scale. Lolita is an excellent drama and a sympathetic portrayal of a man obsessed with a seductive teenage girl. I should make it clear that Professor Humbert is different from a child predator like Jeff in Hard Candy. Jeff actively seeks out children for sexual pleasure, whereas Humbert genuinely loves Lolita in a romantic sense, even if his affection is grossly immoral. I do see some of myself in Professor Humbert, the protagonist of Lolita. Both of us are reserved and awkward around people, but at the same time we are formal and well-mannered. That's not to say I'm attracted to underage women. Hey, Taylor Momsen is of legal age in Australia! Mind you, I usually like women somewhat older than me (you know, Sarah Vowell, Donna Noble, etc.)... (Note: Aside from my YouTube avatar, I do not own any of the media in this video.
