The character "八Ba",literally means 8, in Ba Duan Jin is not only about eight forms, but also refers to the multiple elements in the routine, which restrict to each other, connect with one other and run in a cycle. The character "锦Jin" literally is composed of "金Gold" and "帛Silk" to express its exquisite luxury. In addition, the word "锦Jin" can be understood as the collection of different forms of Daoyin, which should practice as smoothly, fluently, continuously as the silk brocade. It is a complete routine of Health Qigong. Ba Duan Jin, literally translated as The Eight Pieces of Brocade, as a whole is broken down into eight separate exercises or as a routine is united by eight movements, each exercise focuses on one or few different physical areas and Qi (Chi or Energy) meridian. Each form of Ba Duan Jin contains some theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Basic consensus of Ba Duan Jin (1) The traditional Ba Duan Jin was spread earlier than the Song Dynasty and developed greatly in the Ming and Qing Dynasties; (2) There is still no conclusion on the founder of the traditional Ba Duan Jin. It can be said that Ba Duan Jin is an integration of the knowledge, experience and wisdom created by all the wellbeing masters and practitioners in all eras. (3) Before the end of the Qing Dynasty, Ba Duan Jin was mainly a routine of Dao Yin which dominated by body movements. (4)Ba Duan Jin, no matter the different styles or the different ways of practice, all come from the same source, interact with each other in the development, and gradually tend to be the same. Ba Duan Jin is ideal for beginners and advanced ones. Although it looks like quite simply, these exercises have a lot to offer. By involving your mind and spirit into your Qigong practice you will get their full benefits. But, even by practicing the routine as ordinary physical exercises, the Ba Duan Jin will loosen your muscles, improve your body posture, enhance your blood circulation, help to get fitness and relax you. Ba Duan Jin traditionally contains both standing and seated routine of eight forms each. In the modern era, the standing style is by far the most widely practiced. The particular order in which the eight movements are practiced sometimes varies, with the above-mentioned order being the most common. Reminding: for beginners whose movements are not skilled, as long as the natural breathing is good or we can say, forget breathing. Don’t deliberately breathe or hold your breath. With abdominal breathing will be better if it can be applied. As the movements open up and become proficient, the breathing will be found in the movements, and then the body can be benefited more.
