BEAR ACL surgery is a new procedure designed to use an implant infused with blood to take advantage of the ability of the ACL to heal. The advantage of the BEAR (bridge enhanced ACL restoration) over the more commonly done ACL reconstruction surgery is that there is no need to harvest a tendon or ligament graft from another place in the knee. This reduces the amount of surgical incisions which helps the patient to leave the other parts of their knee alone. It also raises the question, "Do we really need this ACL repair procedure for the ACL to heal?....Or can it heal on its own?" It seems that surgeons and medical device companies have moved into this direction because the acknowledge that the ACL has the ability to heal and does not always need to be repaired with a graft as has traditionally been done.
