The Broch of Mousa (footage starts at 1.30) alone is worth the hassle to get to Shetland. A broch is a structure protecting its owner agains sporadic raiding but it was probably built for prestige as well. They were widely spread in Scotland around the year 0. It has double-skinned drystone walls with space for little rooms or stairs in-between. The one on the little island of Mousa is complete and stands to its original height. You can climb the starts and get to the top. Even Earl Harold found it hard to capture in 1153. But before we get to Mousa we start at Stanydale "Temple", a structure that probably wasn't a temple but its use is unknown. It was built around 3000 to 2000 BC. Next is Loch of Strom with very scant ruin remains on a tiny island. Clickhimin is another broch with later additions. It rises to the more typical height in its ruined state of 2 to 3 meters. After Mousa which is reached once a day (weather permitting) with a boat seating 60 you'll see Fort Charlotte in Lerwick. Best viewed from a drone of course. Ein Broch is eine Fliehburg aus der Zeit um das Jahr null, von denen es in Schottland einige Hundert gab. Die Mauern sind zweiwandig, dazwischen ist Raum für kleinere Kammern und Treppen. Der von Mousa ist der einzige voll erhaltene, der seine Originalhöhe von 13 m erreicht. Man kann bis nach oben steigen. Sogar 1153 fand ein Earl es noch zu anstrengend, den Broch zu erobern. Bevor wir allerdings nach Mousa kommen, geht es los bei Skandale "Temple", der wohl kein Tempel war. Welche Funktion er vor mindestens 4.000 Jahren hatte, ist aber unbekannt. Nach einem kurzen Abstecher zum Loch of Strom, wohin mich eine Miniruine auf einer Miniinsel lockte, kommen wir zu Clickhiminin Broch, einem zwar mit weitläufigen Anbauten, aber der typischen ruinierten Höhe von 2 bis 3 Metern.
