This hymn, written by Charles Wesley, expresses in song all that his brother John was trying to do through preaching. It was John Wesley who, echoing the words of the Apostle Paul, declared: "If I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about; for I am under a commission. Woe is me if I preach not the gospel!" But the heart of it was love - love for God and his fellow men. Brother Charles was the supreme exponent of this through song. Together, they set the nation on fire. I have recorded this hymn elsewhere to a different tune, but I am grateful to Patrick Henry, a subscriber to this channel, who in December 2020 drew my attention to 'Mount Sion', the tune to which it is set in the Methodist Hymn Book. 'Mount Sion' is indeed a fine piece by Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831), a pupil of the great Joseph Haydn, and as famous a composer as any of his time, although his works are now largely forgotten. Anyone who has read a biography of Frederic Chopin will know that his favourite instrument was a Pleyel piano, on which he gave his first and last Paris concerts. Sure enough, it was Ignaz Pleyel, musician and entrepreneur, who founded the famous Maison Pleyel in Paris, not only building pianos but also publishing the works of many classical composers.
