In this slide, we’ll explore three ways to use Terraform with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), each offering unique benefits and trade-offs. Let’s take a closer look. 1. Local Setup on Your LaptopRunning Terraform CLI locally gives you full control over the setup and works offline for certain preconfigurations. It’s ideal for multi-cloud deployments, as it’s not limited to OCI. However, this method requires manual installation of Terraform, configuration of access keys, and responsibility for managing the state file. This option is extensively covered in this course, as it provides maximum flexibility and control. 2. OCI Cloud ShellThe OCI Cloud Shell is a web-based terminal with Terraform preinstalled and preconfigured to interact with your OCI tenancy. It eliminates the need for local setup and integrates seamlessly with OCI Object Storage for managing the state file. However, it requires an internet connection, has limited compute resources, and is subject to session timeouts. While not covered in this course, it’s a great tool for quick experiments or one-off tasks. 3. OCI Resource ManagerOCI Resource Manager automates Terraform execution and manages the state file directly in the cloud. It integrates natively with OCI, making it ideal for managed workflows and orchestration. On the downside, it offers less flexibility than the CLI and may have a steeper learning curve for beginners. This option is also not covered in this course. Summary:We’ll focus on the Local Setup on Your Laptop throughout this course for its flexibility and control. However, you now understand the alternative options: OCI Cloud Shell for quick setups and OCI Resource Manager for managed workflows. Let’s move forward!
