On 12th March 2025, the PNG Parliament passed a landmark constitutional amendment. Three major changes were made: The Preamble of the Constitution was amended to boldly declare God as the ultimate source of authority over Papua New Guinea. Section 1 was amended to officially change the country’s name from The Independent State of Papua New Guinea to The Independent and Christian State of Papua New Guinea. Section 3 was amended to include the Holy Bible as one of the nation’s official symbols. Under the National Identity Act, any person who tampers with the Bible commits a crime against the Independent and Christian State of Papua New Guinea.
