The relationship between the White House and the Fed, the United States central bank, is going through one of its most tense moments. April 2025 marked a new episode in the historic feud between Donald Trump and Jerome Powell, chairman of the Fed. It all began when Powell publicly warned that Trump's trade policies were generating headwinds for the economy. In a recent speech, Powell pointed out that the widespread tariffs imposed by the Trump administration were significantly larger than anticipated and that policy changes of such magnitude had put the Fed in uncharted waters, facing a risk of stagflation—that is, economic stagnation combined with high inflation. As expected, Trump's reaction was explosive, even suggesting that he was unhappy with Powell and that if he wanted him gone, he would go quickly. In fact, a White House adviser confirmed that Trump's team was considering whether they could legally fire Powell. Something that would test the independence of the Fed, whose sole objective is to control inflation and maximize employment. So the question is: Why did Trump escalate this confrontation at this particular moment? Is this a political move by Trump? And what happened in the 1970s when the Fed lost its independence?
