A conversation about Francophone African literature moderated by literary agent Raphaël Thierry alongside scholars and writers Khalid Lyamlahy and Alain Serge Agnessan during #ReadingAfrica Week. The free flowing, back-and-forth conversation touched on many crucial issues, wandering through questions of language and borders, centers and margins, memory, space, activism, intertextuality… all the ways literature moves, shifts, and carries us: ✨ the power of translation ✨ the importance of regional publishing ecosystems ✨ literature as a bridge between places and people ✨ the financial and structural realities of publishing ✨ the transformative power of print and translation activism, such as ros Schwartz ✨ symbolic capital… and more. From French/Francophone debates to postcolonial thought, from the legacies of Fanon, Césaire, Mongo Beti, Kourouma, Kateb Yacine, Laâbi, and the Souffles generation, to today’s conversations around publishing, prizes, movement, and the “untellable,” the trio brought knowledge, nuance, and real humanity to the table. Francophone writing isn’t a small island — it’s a vital part of a global conversation.
