The first version of Plastic Jesus is not the first version I heard. The first recording of Plastic Jesus was by a comedy duo called The Goldcoast Singers, and it's a joke song about how you can buy glow in the dark religious icons (for only $1.98, no CODs please). Most people in 1962 found this humorous enough, but few still considered it blasphemous. The first time I heard Plastic Jesus was in the Paul Newman classic, Cool Hand Luke. Serving time in a work prison camp, the titular character one evening receives a telegram that his mother has died. Luke drags his feet to his bunk, picks up a banjo, and plays this ridiculous song. Strumming slowly he tries, but fails to hide the emotions he is experiencing. Countless others have covered this song since then. Many adding their own ridiculous verses to it along the way. I recorded this November 28 intending it to be a b-side for an original single called "My Arm" which is either forthcoming or not.
