While serving a 57-year sentence, Tommy Wickerd has found purpose in an unexpected way: teaching fellow incarcerated people and corrections officers American Sign Language (ASL) at California’s San Quentin prison. Growing up with a deaf older brother, Wickerd understood better than most the isolation felt by deaf prisoners. Sharing his knowledge of ASL became a way for Wickerd to make amends and create community at the prison. Wickerd’s story is at the heart of “Friendly Signs,” a documentary that writer, podcaster and San Quentin Film Festival founder Rahsaan “New York” Thomas directed and co-produced with Christine Yoo, while Thomas was incarcerated at San Quentin. “Friendly Signs” is one of several criminal justice projects supported by The Marshall Project and the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Short Film Fund. “Friendly Signs” took three years to make, with COVID-19 delays in filming and distribution.
