But what is positive reinforcement and how is it different from bribery? Today’s video is all about positive reinforcement vs. bribery. Autism and bribery can sometimes come together when parents and professionals interact with children with autism, especially if there are lots of problem behaviors present. But it’s important to ensure that we’re not using bribery, as this can almost always make long term goals harder to reach. There’s a difference between using rewards and bribery to incentivize good behavior. Rewards vs. Bribes can be thought of giving a child a lollipop for behaving in the store vs. giving a child a lollipop because they are not behaving in the store. When thinking about ABA programming, we should never be providing reinforcement in response to poor behavior. Instead, providing reinforcement should be planned, adult-led, and following good or expected behavior.
