Think an abscess always means emergency surgery? Not anymore! For Crohn’s disease, abscesses—painful pockets of pus—can often be drained without a big operation. The least invasive option is percutaneous drainage, where a doctor uses CT or ultrasound to guide a thin needle through your skin into the abscess, placing a small tube to drain the pus over several days. Most people feel better quickly and recover faster with this method, and it can sometimes help you avoid surgery altogether. Open surgical drainage is reserved for abscesses that are too large, deep, or tricky to reach, or if percutaneous drainage doesn’t work. Small abscesses (under 30 mm) can sometimes be treated with antibiotics alone, but larger ones almost always need drainage. The right drainage method means faster healing and less downtime—so you can get back to living, not just recovering. Follow @thegrumblinggut if you found this helpful!
