(14 Oct 1999) Eng/French/Nat BELMONDO IS OUR MAN IN HAVANA Story: Jean-Paul Belmondo Date: Recent Location: Cuba It is now forty years since the French actor JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO made his screen debut in JEAN-LUC GODARD's hugely influential BREATHLESS, one of the most important works of the Nouvelle Vague movement. Since then he has had a long and distinguished film career that has allowed him to show off his versatility in both comic and tragic roles. Belmondo is now at pensionable age but he still retains the highly distinctive look that has helped sustain his career and he shows no sign of retiring just yet. APTN caught up with the screen idol down Cuba way where he is busy filming his latest role in a French-Cuban co-production called THE FLEETING STAR. The film is currently shooting on location in Cienfuegos, which is about a two hour drive from Havana, It is the latest project of French film director PHILIPPE DE BROCA whose credits include \"Cartouche\", \"Les Tripulations D'un Chinois En Chine\" (A Chinaman's troubles in China), \"L'Homme de Rio\" (The Man From Rio) and \"Enrique de Lagardere.\" Belmondo himself starred in \"Cartouche\", \"Les Tripulations D'un Chinois En Chine\", and \"L'Homme de Rio.\" With this latest film, de Broca makes a foray into sci-fi but ignores the superficial dazzle of special effects and technological oneupmanship that is common to the genre. Instead, he presents a deeply human picture of an encounter between people's of two different galaxies. \"La Estrella Fugaz\" (The Fleeting Star) tells the story of a visit to earth by an inhabitant of Beta Centauris, the smallest planet in the Virgo constellation, some 100 million miles away. But this is not about a strange looking alien, but a young girl, or to be more precise, the external reproduction of a young girl. Lulu (THYLDA BARES) possesses an infinite fount of wisdom but is incapable of feeling, so she cannot live her life to its fullest; and she is also immortal. Tired of an infinite existence whose sole aim is the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, she decides to escape to earth for the following reasons: \"we are sure that sadness exists, but we are never sad; we know of the existence of vertigo, but we are never afraid of falling; we know everything there is to know about death, but we never die.......the population of my planet never changes, and we carry on knowing and learning all there is to know, without ever experiencing anything. We can never feel love, because we do not have children, we can never be afraid, because we never die. The only thing left for us is to know everything down to the smallest detail - which is never enough.\" The director has plenty of chance to show off his skills with action. Lulu \"falls\" in the middle of the jungle and she immediately makes friends with an aboriginal tribe. Her presence is detected by the more sophisticated observatories and scientific anxiety over her presence finds a natural partner in \"the military preoccupation to defend against any possible invasion.\" These two seperate forces ultimately end up in conflict. But while they endeavour to capture and examine the alien, a romance blossoms between an astronomer and a disaffected European living in the jungle. Lulu's time on earth is like that of a fleeting star, leaving a trail of love behind her. The film shoots from September 6th to October 19th. The locations for the film are Cienfuegos, The mountains of Escambray (the location where APTN shot), the city of Trinidad, Matanzas, and Havana.
