Bolivia’s presidential election marks a new chapter in the country's politics. After nearly 20 years of dominance by the leftist Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party, centrist, pro-market Rodrigo Paz wins the ballot, topping his right-wing rival Jorge "Tuto" Quiroga. Campaigning with the slogan "capitalism for all", Paz has pledged free-market reforms, while maintaining the social programmes for the poor. Most of the MAS party’s two-decade long rule was led by Bolivia’s first indigenous president Evo Morales, whose socialist policies initially lifted millions out of poverty, yet led to the economic downturn in the long-run. The President-elect Paz also seeks to build closer ties with the US, hoping to thaw the long-strained bilateral relations. Among the incoming government’s key challenges is the fragmented parliament, where Paz’s Christian Democrat Party will not have a majority to ensure passage of laws and reforms. Will the South American country's new chapter bring long-sought economic turnaround and stability?
