Helping a Horse to Stand While Saddling

For the past couple of weeks I have been slowly introducing my un-started 6 year old mare to the saddle. Izzy has been a bit bothered by the saddle and moves off anytime I pick it up. I attempted to apply the method of "allowing her to move until she finds a place to get still" but Izzy can move for a lot longer than I can hold that saddle! Plus, this approach seemed to only heighten Izzy's evasive response to the saddle. My mentor helped me to discover that in order to help Izzy to relax and achieve a soft mental attitude she first needed me to get centered. Robbie coached me on how to drop my energy down and become grounded so that I may be a reassuring presence for Izzy. Once I was centered and grounded I could effectively help Izzy to find her own center by essentially blocking her movements before she made them. In this video you will see me "centering" Izzy with the halter knot in attempts to head off her movements before they start. When I grab hold of her this way its as if I'm saying, "Don't worry about it, everything is all right." By doing this, I am asking Izzy to relax and feel back to me and as a result, she manages to find a soft mental attitude! This is a subtle way of making the wrong thing difficult and the right thing easy, and ultimately Izzy decides the easiest thing for her to do is to stand instead of move away. By the end of this session Izzy is so relaxed that I am able to put a foot in the stirrup and step up halfway into the saddle! I am reminded here of a quote by Bill Dorrance - "When the horse understands what you want, he will do what that is, right up to the limit of his physical capacity...and sometimes well beyond it."
