This environmental parable about moral courage encourages doing what we can for our planet – a fitting call to action for these turbulent times. We are grateful to our teachers online, and to children at home doing what they can, and are pleased to share the wonder of music and storytelling with them. In this enchanting new opera, the animals of the forest are inspired to come together by Dukdukdiya, the Hummingbird, to save their beautiful home from a raging fire. This opera is influenced by the graphic novel written by acclaimed Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and includes elements of his dramatic Haida-manga illustrations. The Flight of the Hummingbird began with the Quechan people in the highlands of Peru. Through pre-contact trade routes, the parable then moved north to Halkomelem speaking people. This telling of the story started in Haida Gwaii. The parable then became a book, and the book inspired this opera. Learning and acknowledging the history of a story shows respect for Indigenous peoples and recognizes their enduring relationship to the land.
