To coincide with the 70th birthday of the simply sublime Maureen McGovern (27 July, 1949), this post is due to a most creative and enjoyable remix by DJ Discocat and my weaving of the only performance footage there is of the singer performing her 1979 hit 'Different Worlds' which began its chart ascent 40 years ago! For me there are 4 recordings by this special artist that have stuck out over the near 50 years i have been enjoying pop music. 'The Morning After' her worldwide #1 smash from the Oscar winning movie 'The Poseidon Adventure' was my introduction to Maureen McGovern. As a movie song it is wonderful but it is such a universal love song and is for many people her most significant hit. However in Australia, in 1975 we also loved another disaster movie theme song: 'We May Never Love Like This Again' from 'The Towering Inferno' taking it into the Top 5; inexplicably not a hit in America. The third of the noteworthy songs for me was from yet another movie ; 1978's 'Superman' and the love theme - 'Can You Read My Mind'. Missing the Top 40 (#52), it was up until that time her biggest Adult Contemporary Chart success - reaching #5. But it is the subject of this post that represents my favourite of Maureen's signature hits; and it is another theme song - this time from television. A two season sitcom 'Angie' featured 'Different Worlds' as its opening title and the track became the singer's 2nd and final Top 40 Billboard hit (after 'The Morning After') - reaching #18 in the fall of 1979, and surprisingly her only #1 Adult Contemporary Hit (2 weeks in September). 'Different Worlds' is simply one of my all time favorite recordings, I loved it from first listening 40 years ago and I love it today, after thousands of spins. I still have the 7 inch single i purchased all those decades ago! At only 2 minutes and 10 seconds it is that rarefied thing of beauty that leaves you wanting more. Pete (aka DJ Discocat has done an exemplary job of extending and remixing this) and I wanted to not only pay tribute to Maureen McGovern but wish her a happy 70th birthday. Her forays into stage musicals, torch songs, and other genres reveal a singer of the most versatile and skilled - with an ability to make any song her very own; however many times it has been covered by other vocalists. The performance footage used here is the only such version I could find of Maureen performing her hit song, and it is clearly not in the same arrangement as the recorded version so it made for a most difficult edit, but it is more about celebrating the spirit and magic of the song and this most beautiful of artists that has delighted her fans for nearly 5 decades. I have also used a version of the opening titles of the aforementioned ;Angie' with the cute Donna Pescow (whatever happened to her?) and the even cuter Robert Hays. The show was also noteworthy for me for introducing another generation to the irreplaceable Doris Roberts (Marie in 'Everybody Loves Raymond') . Admittedly i watched 'Angie' mostly to hear Maureen sing the song and watch the handsome couple's trials and tribulations! A very happy birthday to the sublime Maureen McGovern. Thank you for the music.
