February 2023 | Dr. Elaine Borawski, PhD, Dr. Meredith Goodwin, Phd, & Ms. Alyssa Glenn, MPP Nourishing Beginnings is a countywide program that links Medicaid-eligible pregnant individuals with community health workers who assess and address the social needs of their clients and, for those eligible, tests two different models of food access (food delivery and financial assistance with personalized navigation). This project aims to support pregnant people by connecting them to fresh, nutritious foods during pregnancy and postpartum. This presentation highlights the history, implementation strategies, and current milestones. Elaine A. Borawski, PhD: Dr. Borawski is the Angela Bowen Williamson Professor of Community Nutrition and the Vice-Chair for Applied Research in the Department of Nutrition and is the Faculty Lead of the Community and Collaboration Component of the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative. She is the Principal Investigator for the Nourishing Beginnings Study. Meredith Goodwin, PhD: Dr. Goodwin is a Research Scientist in the Department of Nutrition and with the PRCHN and has served as the Team Science Coordinator for the Community and Collaboration Component of the CTSC. Dr. Goodwin is a co-investigator on the Nourishing Beginnings project overseeing the day-to-day coordination of research activities. Alissa Glenn, MPP: Ms. Glenn serves as the Director of Community Health and Nutrition at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Alissa leads the Food Bank’s work at the intersection of food and health, including building partnerships with healthcare providers and managed care organizations, leading research on the effect of food interventions on food-insecure populations, and overseeing nutrition education initiatives. Alissa is a Co-Principal Investigator for Nourishing Beginnings and oversees the food bank’s intervention component of the program.
