The city is situated on the border of Europe and Asia on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains During the Soviet years, the city was a powerful industrial and administrative centre of Russia. The city made a huge contribution to the victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War. The Ural Heavy Machine Building Plant was one of the largest Soviet manufacturers of armored vehicles in the war years. In the postwar years, new industrial and agricultural enterprises were put into operation and a massive housing construction scheme was begun.....
