Vocal tics are quite tricky but fairly common. They can includes words, sentences, sounds with the mouth or nose, other movements inside the mouth, and movements inside the throat or other parts involved in breathing. Naturally the examples people think of are usually words, especially profanity, but those are actually fairly rare. It is much more common for vocal tics to involve clicks, popping sounds, sniffs, snorts, or humming sounds (like “Mm” or “Umm”). These kinds of tics involve muscles and movements that we usually do not give a lot of thought to and thus have fairly little awareness of. That makes them quite a bit more challenging to begin working on. The first step is therefore to begin building awareness! In this video I discuss using breathing exercises to build awareness. The objective of these exercises is not to produce relaxation or calm. They might, and that is nice and worth enjoying, but it is not the objective! So if you do not feel relaxed or calm, don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong! Also, I got a haircut.
